At B Local, our focus is amplification, collaboration, and supporting fellow B Corps with a mandate to do good as we do well.

Bullfrog Power is the next in our Spotlight series with a goal to promote B Local member businesses, as well as bolster greater community through shared learning and experiences.

Talk to us about your WHY. Why a purpose driven business and why the pursuit of B Corp?

Bullfrog Power was founded in 2005 with a visionary goal: to transform Canada’s electricity landscape. We believe that decarbonizing our energy systems is essential to combatting climate change. We do this by offering businesses and individuals high-quality sustainability solutions to address their Scope 1, 2, and/or 3 emissions. By choosing BullfrogPower's green energy, homes and businesses can reduce their environmental impact, support the development of new renewable generation in Canada, and help to create a cleaner world for today and tomorrow.

Is there a B Corp or B Corp leader that you look up to? Explain.

Yes, there are over 50 bullfrogpowered B Corp businesses that we look up to every day. Each of these businesses are on a mission to drive positive environmental impact and reduce their carbon emissions through Bullfrog Power’s renewable energy. By addressing their carbon footprint, these companies are helping transition Canada’s grid and are meeting higher standards of performance, accountability, and transparency. What does being a B Corp mean to you? To your team? To your customers?:

Bullfrog Power has been a certified B Corp since 2011 and was one of the first Canadian companies to reach certification. As a B Corp, we’re part of a community that strives for social and environmental change. At our core, we believe that businesses have a responsibility to address their environmental impact and can do so on both a national and community-scale. Through our community-based green energy projects grant, we provide critical funding to local efforts focused on transitioning communities away from fossil fuels. All bullfrogpowered customers help fund these small-scale, community-led projects, including solar panels on schools and in Indigenous communities, education and training programs, and a cleantech accelerator.

Can you share a specific example of how your company values have shaped your business practices or decision-making process?

Bullfrog Power believes that every business has a responsibility to be transparent and set high standards, a responsibility we take seriously. As green energy isn’t something you can see or touch, we undergo a voluntary green energy audit every year. When we launched in 2005, we pioneered this concept of an annual audit for green electricity retailers. We also created audits for green natural gas (2011) and green fuel (2016) when we first introduced those products.

Our audits, performed by a national auditing firm, assess whether the renewable energy sold to our customers and retired on their behalf is fairly stated, in all material respects, in accordance with the criteria outlined in our reports. In addition to our transparent, reliable reporting, we provide sustainability communications support to our customers, helping them to clearly and accurately share their impact.

As a local Ontario business, how do you engage with and support your local community? Can you share any recent initiatives or partnerships that highlight your community involvement?

There are many ways our company and its employees engage with our local community. Just in the last few years, Bullfrog Power employees have tested water quality at the Toronto lakeshore, planted trees at Sunnybrook Hospital, picked up garbage from local parks, and supported rooftop community gardens. These events connect us with local movements that are working for the good of the planet. In addition, we actively sponsor local community events throughout the year, such as DoorsOpen at the Billy Bishop Airport, TIFF, and Pride Toronto.

Our community engagement reaches communities across Canada. Together with our partners at Iron & Earth and BASF Canada, we helped bring an Indigenous-focused renewable energy training program to Maskwacis, Alberta. Community participants were educated in installing two solar arrays and a wind turbine and came away with the skills needed to contribute to the green energy transition.
